The Major Case Squad was activated after a deadly shooting inside Matthews Park in Bridgeton Saturday evening.
Police said they found 37-year-old Leroy D. Allen dead of gunshot wounds inside the park, located on Ayrshire Drive, just after 6 p.m. Investigators also found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound inside the park. A third man, 39, later showed up to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury from the incident.
"Sounded like a string of firecrackers but i know what gun shots sound like," said resident Cliff Wilms
Wilms and his family live behind Matthews Park for 20 years. He said Saturday evening wasn't the first time they've ever heard gunshots but it was the closest.
"Never 300 yards of way at the bottom of the hill where my kids play basketball, learned how to ride a bike, learned how to walk at the playground, the ball field is where all the kids play ," Wilms said.
Wilms said he is thankful that more people weren't hurt, especially children.
"I can't tell you how many times my kids say I'm going to the park and I say OK, not thinking twice that it could be the last time I see them," said Wilms.
Police have not released any information about what led up to the shooting.
