Man who robbed 2 Metro East banks was on probation for other bank robbery

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Police said an Edwardsville man who pleaded guilty to robbing two Metro East banks was on probation for robbing a different bank in 2009.

Marcus Thornton, 37, pleaded guilty on Friday to a charge of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. He already pleaded guilty to the two bank robberies on March 22.

Police said he robbed a Regions Bank in Lebanon, Illinois on October 13, 2016, taking $13,710.90. He also robbed a U.S. Bank in O’Fallon, Illinois on February 9, 2017. Authorities said he took $10,620.

At the time of the robberies, Thornton was on federal supervised release for a bank robbery in Mississippi in 2009.

Sentencing has been scheduled for July 27.
