ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A mentoring group is helping young black men be agents of change.

ManUpSTL was founded about a year ago and is an organization aimed at helping men in urban areas have resources to help them grow in society. The founder of the group is Chris Hill.

Hill says he and his core leadership team have developed programs and empowerment sessions where young men have left changed.

“There is always purpose inside of every man,” said Hill. “Whether you know what that purpose is isn’t a factor – finding it is what’s going to matter. ManUp, that’s what we help people to do, we help people find purpose and we help push purpose.”

Hill says the objective is to begin shifting the narrative of men, the one he says society has sometimes distorted.

“That’s what ManUpSTL is about, breaking those traditions and those barrier about the stereotypes of black men. The black man has carried legacy for years and I really believe this organization is what’re really going to set the tone for the next millennial,” said Darrell Hamilton, who joined the group a few months ago.

Hamilton says he’s noticed a change in himself since joining.

Hill says St. Louis and the whole country needs to know the importance of men and the impact they have.

“I know the importance of having a support system and being around like-minding individuals who can do great things in the community,” said Larry Davis Jr., ManUpSTL co-founder. “I ran for office, working in DC, so I know the impact that young black men can have on their communities.”

Saturday, April 28 at Keiner Plaza, ManUpSTL is hosting a big social media event called #OperationSuave. The event kicks off at 11.

It’s a city-wide silent movement that will be displayed through photography in front of iconic and historical places in the city. Aimed at challenging culture and changing societal views.

All men are welcome and they will have extra suit jackets and ties.
