ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

Teachers in one St. Charles County district are unhappy about their new contract that district officials just approved.

Teachers shouted at members of the Francis Howell School Board as they voted on Thursday to impose a new deal that some teachers say won’t help them at all.

“For me, because I taught so many years, I’m at the bottom of my contract and I will not get anything,” said teacher Donna Malkmus.

Malkmus has spent 33 years with Francis Howell. Under the new contract, she is excluded from the two percent raise that the board just approved. A board spokesman says the rejection of a tax hike by voters in early April has put added stress on the budget.

“In order to avoid deficit spending, the board felt two percent was the increase they could give,” said Matt Deichmann with the Francis Howell School District.

The district insists the vast majority of teachers will get the two percent hike. The teachers, however, wanted to get back to negotiating, pressing for a higher across the board raise.

Unable to legally strike in Missouri, the teachers say their strategy is to work only to the contact, skipping out on the extras.
