ST. LOUIS  (KMOV.com) -- A man was shot near the St. Louis University campus on Thursday, prompting an alert to students.

Police said the shooting happened in the 3000 block of South Grand, at the Grandview Apartments. St. Louis University officials issued an alert following the shooting, due to the proximity of the apartment building to campus.

The shooting scene was near Reinart Hall. SLU reports the shooter was taken into custody by police.

Police at the scene told News 4 the shooter is a SLU student. They also said the victim was not a student at the university.

The suspect and victim previously had confrontations and were known to one another. Police said there was a confrontation earlier in the morning that settled down and then about 9:30 a.m. the two men pulled guns on each other in the lobby of the apartment complex.

The Grandview Apartments are not affiliated with St. Louis University, and few, if any, students live there, the campus told News 4.

The man shot was taken to the hospital and listed in critical, stable condition.

Police said they seized guns from both the shooter and victim.
