ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

For those that live and work along Highway 61 in St. Charles County, improvements to the deadly stretch of Highway 61 are a welcome sight.

MoDOT crews are working on the overpass at Peine Road and Route P at Highway 61 Monday and Tuesday night. An overpass many hope will cut back on the number of accidents on the highway.

Jacqueline Faudi and her two daughters were on their way home when a car rear-ended them and pushed their car across the median into oncoming traffic in January 2016. All three were killed.

Two years later, improvements are finally coming to a stretch of Highway 61 between Wentzville and Moscow Mills.

“Too little, too late. It should have been done a long, long time ago,” said Robert Hall, Jacqueline Faudi’s father.

The project began last August but MoDOT says the installation of the girders, or the bottom portion of the overpass is a major milestone in the $10 million dollar project. But it’s the cable barriers, a separate project, that Hall thinks would have saved the lives of his daughter and granddaughters. Such cable barriers are almost complete along parts of Highway 61.

Northbound lanes of Highway 61 closed Monday night and is expected to wrap up around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. Tuesday night, southbound lanes will be partially closed starting at 8pm. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2019.
