ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – South Outer Interstate 70 past Mid Rivers Mall Drive will remain closed through at least the weekend after a semi-truck caught fire Monday morning.

The semi-truck fire forced the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 to close at Mid Rivers Mall Drive before 4 a.m. Central County Fire Assistant Chief Gary Donovan said the driver of the semi-truck lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash, flip over and catch fire.

When firefighters arrived at the scene there was heavy fire. Crews let the ethanol that the semi-truck was carrying burn off.

“The truck was positioned away from any buildings, and the driver had safely escaped the scene. We needed to wait for the liquid to burn off so the ethanol would not remain on the roadway. If we had extinguished the fire the process of removing the liquid once the fire was extinguished would have resulted in a more dangerous situation, risking the potential of reigniting and injury to firefighters and bystanders. The cleanup process also would have taken several hours longer,” says Central County Fire & Rescue Chief Dan Aubuchon.

The driver of the semi-truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The eastbound lanes of the interstate reopened around 6:30 a.m.

MoDOT said South Outer Interstate 70 will remain closed through at least the weekend because the fire damaged several slabs of pavement, a barrier wall, guardrail and light pole. Drivers will be able to detour around the closure by taking the north outer road to Cave Springs Drive and then getting on eastbound Interstate 70 or doubling back to the south outer road.
