SLPS aims to guide students dealing with traumatic events with workshop

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Public School District(SLPS) is tackling how to help students who are dealing with trauma with a workshop event.

The school district held its first ever trauma workshop for parents and caregivers Saturday morning. The goal is to teach parents the skill to help their children how to deal with various issues better.

School officials say 90 percent of the district's students live in poverty and 35 percent lack stable housing.

"Unfortunately our families are exposed to trauma, whether its through community violence or through poverty so being able to support students to meet their social, emotional and academic needs," said Megan Marietta ,SLPS social work services manager.

SLPS received a federal grant from the Department of Education for the workshop.
