CASEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

An unmarked police car and a cow were involved in an accident near Caseyville, Illinois Saturday afternoon that left one person seriously injured.

The accident happened around 12:15 p.m. on westbound Interstate 64 near the Caseyville exit. All westbound lanes of I-64 were closed for about 45 minutes.

Illinois State Police said a male officer was pursuing a speeding vehicle on I-64. During the pursuit, a third vehicle, a silver Honda Civic, got caught up in the middle.

The driver of the Honda then struck a cow that was walking on the highway. The unmarked police car then rear-ended the Honda.

A 76-year-old St. Louis man driving the Honda had to be extricated out. 

The man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The police officer ,41, was also taken to the hospital but has non-life-threatening injuries.

Illinois State Police said the speeding vehicle that the police officer was originally pursuing got away.

The cow continued walking and its injuries are unknown. Police are searching for the cow's owner, who is expected to face a fine for the cow being in the roadway.

The Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.
