Missouri deputy, 26, dies in head-on crash

MILLER COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed a deputy from Miller County died in a head-on crash Friday.

The deputy has been identified as Casey Shoemate, 26, of Eldon, Missouri.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. on Route Y just north of Rabbit Hill Rd. in Miller County. Miller County is located in central Missouri, bordering the eastern portion of the Lake of the Ozarks.

Police said Shoemate was driving southbound on the two-lane road with his emergency lights and sirens on. He tried to pass the vehicle in front of him by moving into the northbound lane, but struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Shoemate was pronounced dead at the scene just three minutes after the crash.

The driver of the oncoming vehicle involved is identified as Robert Levin, 65, of Florissant, Missouri. Police said he is in serious condition and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Police said both Shoemate and Levin were wearing their seat belts.
