ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The weekend St. Louis is hosting the Women's NCAA Gymnastics Championship.

12 universities will compete for the coveted title at Chaifetz Arena on the SLU campus on Friday and Saturday.

St. Louis Sports Commission Vice President Chris Roseman believes that the Gateway city is the perfect place to hold the event.

"Where St. Louis sits in the country as far as geography, makes it really easy to get here for the gymnastics fans," said Roseman."This is our fifth major gymnastics championship that we’ve had in the last three years, so it’s been a great run."

It’s expected to be a ruckus environment. Like other team sports, the gymnasts train together constantly creating comradery amongst them. Making it a fun atmosphere for them and the fans.

"Even though there is only one person on the apparatus at a time you’ve got their whole them down below routing them on," said Roseman. "You really kind of feed off that energy and the kids really perform well in that environment."

While there are no teams from our area in this year’s the NCAA Championship, it will be a homecoming for LSU’s All-American gymnast Sarah Finnegan, who grew up in St. Louis.

"I love coming back to St. Louis," said Finnegan."I grew up here so it’s my second home. I always get excited because this is my childhood and this is what I know so it’s fun coming back here and seeing old friends and family."

The St Louis Sports Commission is hoping to put on an NCAA championship to remember so they can continue to bring top-level gymnastics events to the city.

"We are looking ahead for next bid process is in 2020," said Roseman. "It’s really important for us to put on a great show for the NCAA and for the student-athletes, coaches, and for the reputation of St. Louis"

The event will begin tomorrow. The first session will be held at noon and the second session will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The top three from each session will advance to the super six  team final on Saturday.
