ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Alton teachers voted to ratify a new contract, meaning there will be no strike.

Teachers voted on the contract Friday evening, and 80 percent of the teachers voted for the new contract.

The deal includes a pay raise for teachers, which was one of the main issues with their school district.

The Alton Education Association told News 4 a tentative agreement between the sides had been reached reached Tuesday before Friday's vote.

Monday, teachers started picketing because their raises were not as much as they wanted from the district after they received a boost in funding from the state. The union said the district is getting $500,000 more from the state, however, the district said they couldn’t afford the pay the raises the teachers expect.

The Alton Education Association released the following statement on Tuesday:

The current offer from the Alton School Board is a step in the right direction and will help the AEA continue to provide an excellent education to all students in the district. The offer will provide all of our members with a long-awaited salary increase. This offer would not have been possible without the unity of our members and the support of the community. We thank them all. We are hopeful the AEA membership will approve this proposal, so we can get back to focusing on what we do best educate or students.”

The Alton Education Association represents 707 teachers, teachers’ aides, secretaries, clerks, school psychologists, maintenance employees and food service employees that serve 6270 students in the Alton Community School District.

The AEA is set to hold a ratification vote on the tentative agreement on Fri., April 20. AEA will not be releasing any details on the contract until after the ratification vote.
