ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) – Tuesday, officials in St. Charles County will plant a “pinwheel garden” for child abuse victims.

The pinwheels will represent child abuse victims in recognition of April being child abuse prevention month.

Last year, there were 290 children in St. Charles County who experienced some form of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and/or neglect, according to the county. In 2016, there were 228 children who were victims.

The St. Charles County prosecutor said in many cases there is no third party witness and almost always it’s the word of the victim. Many of the victims are too young to understand the gravity of what they’re going through.

Investigators said speaking up for abused and neglected children is critical as unreported cases could result in a child’s death.

The ceremony dedicating the pinwheel garden will be at the St. Charles County Executive office building at 10 a.m.
