AFFTON (KMOV.com) -

Local grade school students added a new furry classmate to the roster this year – and he’s providing extra comfort and support.

Stormy, a trained German Shepard therapy dog, has been helping students at Meisner Primary School in Affton for months now. The dog was brought into class by teacher Kathy Wagner to calm young students when they get frustrated or angry.

And it seems to be working well.

"He sometimes helps me calm down, sometimes really sad,” said first grader Kye Knight.  “Sometimes I'm petting dogs I calm down."

Wagner had to get special training and certification as a service dog handler. She said other teachers bring their students to the classroom to get one-on-one time with Stormy as a reward.
