CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police recently released surveillance video of a woman being attacked and robbed in a Brentwood parking garage. It's the kind of video that can spark a new interest in self-defense.

Julie Fotouhi recently signed up for a class on self-defense at Tracy's Karate School in Chesterfield.

"In the malls where I shop there have been incidents that have happened lately, So I just want to be prepared if something were to occur you know I can protect myself," said Fotouhi.

Fotouhi attended a self-defense class at Tracy's Karate in Chesterfield that was taught by the owner, Ben Pratt, a 6th degree black belt. The other instructor was David Hofer who holds a 9th degree black belt. Pratt and Hofer stress that everyone should think about self-defense.

"So we all have insurance policies in case we're in a car accident. Well why not have a self defense plan just in case you're attacked," said Pratt.

The class showed students how to hit an attacker hard and the vulnerable places to strike. it also covered many different situations.

"And we give our students a plan for as many different scenarios they themselves might encounter as possible."

The students said they thought the instruction was practical and useful.

Fotouhi said, "I think it's great. I just hope i can use it if I get in that situation."
