ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Motivation is what senior D’aundre Fitzpatrick credits for his full-ride scholarship to Maryville University.

Fitzpatrick beat 550 other students in scholarship competitions and won the Donald M. Suggs Scholarship which is more than $144,000.

“I use everything as motivation. Literally, that’s my ticket out,” said Fitzpatrick.

The senior at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in South City said he’s just a young guy who didn’t give up, although he thought about it.

“I felt like I didn’t have a way,” said Fitzpatrick.

His freshmen year he wanted to give up his dream of going to college because he started drowning in the failures of his environments. Then his principal, Dr. Kacy Seals, saw his potential.

“She was working with me and seen the leadership in me,” said Fitzpatrick. “She also saw me being a young black male, me in my mind the way my mind is if I didn’t use my words the right way that I could come off as like anger.”

Any aggression he may have had, he put in his work and future.

“If we don’t help our students define that choice of weapon then the world will define it for them,” said Dr. Seals.

Fitzpatrick isn’t the only one making moves at Central.

“I believe that Central is a really amazing school. We’re not just numbers around here we’re names, we’re faces, we’re stories, we’re backgrounds,” said Promise Mitchell.

Mitchell is a theater major who recently went to Washington D.C.

Dr. Seals said when schools don’t tap into the passions and interests of students, they fail.

Fitzpatrick will be studying business administration at Maryville. He ultimately wants to become a real estate developer.
