ST. LOUIS ( -- Walmart employees across the nation are preparing to get extra money in their paychecks. Walmart announced Thursday that 890,000 Walmart associates will be receiving a share of $560 million in cash bonuses.

In Missouri, Walmart associates are receiving $14.9 million in combined bonuses. In Illinois, it's $18.5 million. The extra money appeared on their March 8 paychecks.

Earlier in the year, Walmart announced plans to increase the starting wage for all hourly associates in the U.S. to at least $11.  Walmart associates earn quarterly bonuses as part of an overall incentive plan designed to reward associates whose stores achieve sales and customer service goals. Hourly associates in Missouri earned more than $3.4 million, following Q4 comp sales of 2.6 percent in Walmart U.S.

Walmart operates 157 stores in Missouri and 195 in Illinois.
