CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A zebra from the Chandler Ostrich Festival was killed in a collision with an SUV in Chandler on Wednesday morning, according to Sgt. Daniel Mejia with the Chandler Police Dept.

It happened just outside the Chandler Ostrich Festival near Germann and McQueen roads at 6 a.m.

"We're obviously very saddened that there was a loss," said Chandler Chamber President CEO Terri Kimble. "The zebras did get out about 6 a.m. this morning. They had wandered out into the road on McQueen."

According to Hedrick's Promotions, two zebras allegedly breached their holding paddock, one of which was gathered back into the paddock.

"We have never had any incidents throughout all our years of doing the festival," said Joe Hedrick, owner of Hedrick's Promotions. "These animals mean a lot to us - we take great pride and care of our animals and think of them as part of our family."

Sgt. Mejia said the driver of the SUV was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Hedrick's Promotions said they wish to extend their heartfelt well-wishes to the driver of the vehicle and are thankful no one else was seriously injured.

Currently, they cause of how the zebra escaped is unknown.

Additional security measures are being implemented at the Ostrich Festival, Hedrick's Promotions said.

Kimble said the zebra was killed on impact.

"It's just like you have your own pet at home," said Kimble. "Whenever there's a loss it is very tragic."
