ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - The University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) surprised a handful of St. Louis area high school seniors with a full ride scholarship on Monday.

Oakville High School senior Alexis Twillmann wasn’t anticipating an emotional start to the school week or having her family on hand to see it all play out.

She was one of five high school seniors getting a full-ride scholarship to UMSL, which includes tuition, room and board, and books for four years, which is worth around $100,000.

The UMSL admission team also visited Hazelwood Central School, where they delivered the same exciting news to senior Jared Mitchell. They also surprised Mitchell’s classmate Darriell Johnson with a full scholarship.

“I mean, going to college is expensive, having to get this award, working hard, getting the recommendation, maintaining my grades, it really paid off,” said Johnson.

Darriell, Jared and Alexis all plan to major in the science of engineering, and the hope of the scholarship program is that they stay in the St. Louis area.
