Fallen Mobile Police Officer Justin Billa's mother has a message of thanks for the South Alabama community. Gina Jackson is usually the one helping others through tough times, but following the death of her son, it's others who have helped her.
A BBQ benefit raising thousands of dollars, a girl on crutches selling girl scout cookies and a viral picture of a 3-year-old in his police uniform are just three examples of the many ways South Alabama pulled together for one of their own. An outpouring of love Officer Billa's mother says is helping them through this tragedy.
"It's still very hard of course but through all the support we're getting from everyone, even strangers, is what's getting us through and comforting us," Jackson said.
Last week, Jackson, along with friends and family from Houma, Louisiana, cruised into Alabama for the BBQ fundraiser in their jeeps.
Jackson is part of the South Louisiana Jeep Association. The group enjoys sharing their passion for Jeep vehicles, but they also spend a majority of their time traveling to different communities to support those who may need a little help.
"I'm one of them that helps organize the benefit for others and it was very different being on the opposite side of it. As soon as we got there i wanted to jump in and start helping like i normally do so it was very different but we're not gonna stop that actually has pushed me further to do more," Jackson said.
In fact, when FOX10 News caught up with Jackson, she was on her way to a benefit raising money for children battling cancer, but she wanted to let the South Alabama community know, every labor of love shown to their family has not gone unnoticed.
"Justin was just a very giving person. a very loving person. He became a police officer because he wanted to help people and i will always be very proud of him for everything he's done and i am so thankful of how much he has been honored and are still continuing to be honored. Justin's death was not in vain. there's been a lot of positive that has come out of it, it's hard to say that, but we see that."
Jackson says she plans to visit Mobile more frequently to be there for Officer Billa's wife, Erin and their son Taylor.
