GODFREY. Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The Village of Godfrey is using a unique approach to raise the money needed for the Godfrey Fire Protection District to buy a new fire truck. Mayor Mike McCormick set up the "Godfrey Fire Department Rescue Fund" so the public could make donations

"This is a different approach and we're going to try it," said McCormick.

The fire protection district has three pumper trucks but its newest one is in Michigan undergoing a 6 month repair after metal started flaking off the truck's frame.

"So now we're down to two trucks, two pumpers, both of these trucks are 20 years old. Reliability is a concern and maintenance costs for these two trucks are extremely high," said Fire Chief Erik Kambarian.

Kambarian said the fire protection district really needs a new, reliable fire truck but can't afford the more than $400,000 cost. He said revenue from property tax has been flat since the 2008 recession but costs have continued to climb.

Mayor McCormick said he opted not to raise money with a GoFundMe account because of the fees that are charged. So he arranged for contributions by check or cash to be accepted at any area branch for CNB Bank and Carrollton Bank.

"Any of the residents that donate the money 100 percent will be going to the fire district and there'll be no fees, the banks are doing this on their own. In fact one of the banks said they were going to donate some money to it," said McCormick.

The fire chief said he's grateful for the help.

"It's very unique, it's innovative and it's much appreciated," said Kambarian.
