ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The ramp from Interstate 55 northbound to the Poplar Street Bridge will reopen Thursday.

The lane has been closed for the last six months as road crews worked to add an additional lane to the on ramp, ultimately creating two lanes. Only one of the lanes will open Thursday evening and the second is expected to reopen at the end of the year.

The goal at the end of the road project is to have five lanes going into Illinois and four lanes going into Missouri to help traffic move faster.

Several businesses near the ramp and bridge said they are anxious to get relief from the closure congestion.

“That’s why there has been so many accidents right here because rush hour and people,” business owner Paul Gonnella said. “I’m glad that bridge is opening up. It’s going to get the city back on track and get people able to get home safely.”

Since it was closed in September, the Missouri Department of Transportation has been detouring drivers through downtown St. Louis streets and onto the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.
