ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Downtown St. Louis will be busy the next couple weekends as people come to town for two big NCAA men’s basketball tournaments.

Starting March 1 and ending March 4 the Missouri Valley Conference tournament will be at the Scottrade Center. Then, from March 7 to March 11, the Southeastern Conference tournament will be taking place there.

Basketball tournaments provide an economic boost for the city. Last year the St. Louis Convention and Visitor’s Commission said direct spending the weekend of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament hit $8 million.

The commission said hotels will see an influx and some are offering special room rates. A couple years ago, the commission reported that close to 13,000 hotel rooms were booked during basketball tournaments.

Police said they will have more officers around during the tournament, including specialized units like the bike unit and other officers patrolling the streets. The department said their goal is to ensure everyone visiting downtown feels safe.
