What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacteria that makes people sick. It was discovered by an American scientist named Dr. Salmon and has been known to cause illness for over 125 years. The illness people get from a Salmonella infection is called salmonellosis.

Every year, Salmonella is estimated to cause one million foodborne illnesses in the United States, with 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths.

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment.

However, in some persons, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.

How does Salmonella affect humans?

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea/bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Fever

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including:

  • Arterial infections
  • Endocarditis
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle pain
  • Eye irritation
  • Urinary tract symptoms

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

How does Salmonella affect my pets?

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

I bought the food. Now what?

The recall is being issued in an abundance of caution following the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s collection of a retail sample from a single batch which tested positive.  There have been no reports of illness.

Consumers who have purchased Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entrée for Dogs in a 1 lb. bag are urged to return effected product to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may call the company at 920-370-6542 for additional information.
