ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The condition of an 11-year-old who collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at a basketball game is improving.

In early February, Makenna Jones collapsed while playing basketball in Jefferson County. Her dad helped perform CPR and an AED machine was used to restart her heart. The cardiac arrest led to brain damage. She was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital where she remains.

“We raced to her. God put the right people in the right place,” said Makenna’s mom Lindsey Jones.

Doctors say their fast actions made all the difference.

“Every second counts, whenever the heart stops, literally every second counts, every minute counts,” said Dr. Doug Larson with St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Makenna was in a medically induced coma but today she is smiling, making leaps and bounds in her recovery

Her recovery not just involves therapy to help her re-learn things but also notes of encouragement which are making a huge impact.

While Makenna will still have to have a defibrillator put in, her mom says she will be back on the court one day.

Makenna’s mom says they may never know what caused the cardiac arrest.

The family is taking her recovery one day at a time and are planning a birthday party for Makenna who turns 12 on Wednesday.
