WEST ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

Students at Parkway West High School want students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to know they are thinking about them after 17 people were killed in a shooting at the Florida school last week.

The Parkway West students are putting into words how sorry they are for the students in Parkland Florida.

“Posting something on social media has really become second nature for us, but writing letters not only makes it more personal and requires more thought, but we’re allowed to make our voices more personalized,” said sophomore Ronik Bhaskar.

English teacher Erin Fluchel saw an online post from a teacher asking for letters to have ready for when the students in Florida return to school. She didn’t make it a class assignment but a suggestion.

She said it’s not only helping the students in Florida but her own students too.

“It is helpful for them to process through their feelings and sort out ‘do I feel safe in my school? What can I do make sure I feel safe here?” said Fluchel.

Fluchel hopes hundreds of Parkway West students will take part.
