HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Hazelwood is seeking to become the home of a sports complex that would be on the site of the old St. Louis Mills.

The drawings of the proposed complex that developers will become a center for youth sports.

“The Mills is unique in the fact it’s all there. The structure is incredible, you have all these big box stores that convert beautifully to basketball and volleyball and cheerleading and sand volleyball and pickleball. It is amazing what we can create in the walls of the existing mall,” said Dan Buck with Big Sports Properties.

There is private investment, but the hurdle facing Hazelwood is a mountain of tax debt and developers need help from the St. Louis County.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny sent a cellphone video pitch to St. Louis County lawmakers on behalf of the project.

Hazelwood Mayor also made a pitch.

Buck said if St. Louis County doesn’t help with the financing, the complex will go to St. Peters.
