UPDATE: Hamilton made bond and was released from jail on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 9:19 a.m.
Bond was set Wednesday, February 21, 2018 for a Baldwin County Middle School teacher accused of having sexual relations with a 12-year-old student. Prosecutors said the contact happened inside his classroom during school hours. Since an appeal went out for other potential victims to come forward, prosecutors said the phone had been ringing.
From the Baldwin County Jail, Danny Hamilton stood in a red jumpsuit as Judge Bill Scully heard details of the charges against him. He’s accused of numerous sex crimes against the 12-year-old girl. Assistant District Attorney, Matt Simpson said Hamilton was able to get the alleged victim out of her class and into his classroom numerous times under false pretense.
“We know at least five times he would get her to his class privately and under the guise of his statement of working on a roster of where children would sit on a bus,” Simpson said.
Investigators say the girl has never been a student of Hamilton’s but had been a rider on a bus he drove. Prosecutors said a teacher found a note that had been passed from the girl to another student.
“And that teacher did exactly the right thing, notifying supervisors, notified police,” Simpson said. “That’s what got everything involved.”
Since officials appealed to other victims to come forward at a press conference Tuesday afternoon, the investigation has grown considerably.
“We actually had calls during the press conference yesterday. We’ve followed up on some of those leads. We had interviews this morning as a matter of fact with some of the calls we had as a result of the press conference yesterday,” Simpson explained.
Prosecutors say this case may very well become long and involved as more possible victims come forward. Those who have students at the school or live in the community are just still in disbelief at the accusations.
“Just very shocked…very shocked,” said Central Baldwin Middle School parent, Melisa Caudle. “He just did not seem like that type of teacher at all.”
“Well I hate that it can even possible happen in our school system because I’ve had kids and grandkids and nieces and nephews in that school so I hate it,” Jewel Campbell said.
Danny Hamilton was given a bond of $225,000 on all of the charges along with several conditions. If he bonds out, he can have no contact with the victim or her family, no contact with minors under the age of 19, he’ll remain on house arrest and be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor. He has until March 22, 2018, to request a preliminary hearing.
