(CNN/Meredith) – A Father and son share an unimaginable common experience, both have survived mass shootings. Braden Freidkes is a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and was inside when the gunman started shooting.

"I was praying for my friends and family to be okay," Braden said.

He eventually made it out and into his parent's arms.

"We were one of the lucky ones. We were able to get him and he was safe," said father John Freidkes.

But now Braden and his dad have a new shared experience, His father was in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire onto a concert crowd below.

"There was a crowd of people running towards us yelling 'there's a shooter there's a shooter'. We were lucky enough to jump in a taxi cab where there were two women in there already. One was hyperventilating, the other was seemingly in shock,” John said.

Just months later, he still doesn't know what to tell his son.

"My parents never had to talk me about situations like this. You get up every morning and you're afraid to turn on the news," John added.

Now, marches are being organized all across the country to pressure Congress into passing gun reform and make schools safer in hopes of the news never becoming this again.

“I want to come home to see my parents every day. I don't want to be a kid that doesn't come home and they're going to be suffering for a long time,” said Braden.

It's a suffering that's become a dark chapter in this community...and one that's brought a father and son closer together, in a way that neither of them could have ever imagined.
