MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Friends, family, and co-workers held a vigil Sunday to remember a Maryland Heights father and son who were fatally stabbed inside their home.

Instead of dwelling on the tragedy, the family chose to focus on the joy that Malcom B. Mathis III and his 22-month-old son brought into the world.

The father and son were brutally murdered during a domestic incident with a relative Thursday night. Mathis' four-year old daughter Myla and aunt are still recovering in the hospital after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

Family friend Courtney Eaves remembers Mathis as the type of person that would put others before himself.

"A father, friend, just the person when you walk by you have to smile at because he smiled,” said Eaves.

The 33-year-old father was an IT technician at Monsanto who dedicated his life to helping young people in need.

Mathis' sister Tina Hines said the family are taking the deaths day by day focusing on the good and practicing forgiveness.

"God has a plan and everything happens for a reason. I know Malcom planted many seeds and something great is going to happen from this,"said Hines. "We don't know what God's plan is but God has a better plan."

Hines said Mathis' aunt remains in the ICU but his daughter Myla's health has improved.

"She's doing better everyday. She is strong and a fighter," said Hines.

The Maryland Heights Police department helped set up a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses for the family.
