HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Firefighters had to call for assistance Sunday morning because water to fight a fire was not easily accessible.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. on Teson Road in Hazelwood, according to Florissant Valley Fire Protection District Captain Chris Albert. He said the fire was in a detached garage near a residence.

Alber said the nearest public fire hydrant was about 2,000 feet away, which is not uncommon in a more rural area of the district like this. However, they called for a second alarm fire to bring in other crews to help. He said it took hoses from three trucks to pump the water close enough to the fire.

"We had to lay quite a bit of supply line on the ground to be able to get water up to the fire," said Alber.

The cold weather was also an obstacle.

"The cold is always an issue this time of year. We did have some ice issues which we were able to handle with equipment we have on our trucks and as far as the cold weather, just recycling crews more frequently so they don't get overcome by the weather situation," said Alber.

The detached building where the fire originated has heavy damage. The main residence was not affected. No one was injured in the fire, although one firefighter is being treated for a minor injury from moving the hose. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
