ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A local hospital is offering free classes educating the public about how to stop a person from uncontrollably bleeding during an emergency.

The ‘Stop the Bleed’ campaign was initiated by a federal emergency workgroup to prepare the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies.

Experts are using military medicine and research in hemorrhage control during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to help with the public.

Massive bleeding from any cause, from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding within five to 10 minutes.

Depaul Hospital employees will be teaching the public proper bleeding control techniques and how to use their hands, dressings, and tourniquets.

Free classes will be offered on March 3, to register click here.
