ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A local district is trying to calm fears in wake of the school shooting in Florida.

Rockwood School District Superintendent Eric Knost sent a letter to parents hours after at least 17 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a high school in Parkland. In the letter, Knost said the district takes “many measures to protect” students and staff and “will always err on the side of being cautious." He also encouraged parents to “keep lines of communication open” with their kids, and their teachers and school administrators.

In 2014, Missouri lawmakers passed a bill that allows schools choose which staff members could carry a gun on campus to help keep students safe. A state representative now wants the same thing at the college level. Wednesday, a committee at the state capitol passed that bill to another committee.

Below is the letter Knost sent to parents Wednesday:

I’m deeply saddened by the news coming out of Florida this afternoon. While we wait for details to better understand the situation, we know this is yet another senseless act that should never be experienced by anyone, especially our young people. My most sincere thoughts and prayers are with those directly impacted by this tragedy.

While we take many measures to protect our students and staff on a daily basis, we know we can always look to do more. I want our staff, parents and community members to know we will continue to do everything possible to heighten our efforts and awareness. I will never take chances with our students and staff, and I will always err on the side of being cautious.

In the coming days as we learn more about the Florida tragedy, we will make sure to nurture our students and calm any fears they may have in the wake of this horrific incident.

Please keep lines of communication open with your children, as well as with our teachers, staff and administrators. I encourage everyone to stay away from social media rumors and concerns, as such forums typically only worsen a situation.

The safety of our students and staff will always remain our highest priority.
