CAHOKIA, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- The coroner has confirmed an elderly man died after a house fire in Cahokia overnight.

The fire broke out at a home on Westwood Drive, near the airport, around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire chief tells News 4 Cahokia police arrived first and helped them pull a man and woman out of the home.

“They were able to knock the fire down fairly quick after we searched and made sure all the victims were out,” Fire Chief Chris Davis said. “That was our priority, the life, at that time, was to get the victims out and go from there.”

Both victims were in cardiac arrest and first responders performed CPR after pulling them from the home.

After arriving at the hospital, one of the victims, identified as 90-year-old Lloyd Metz, died, according to the St. Clair County Coroner. Metz's daughter, who is in her 50s, was revived at the scene and taken to the hospital.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal has been called in, but so far nothing about the fire appears suspicious.
