EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A group of Edwardsville parents is working together to make sure no student is left without a meal while attending a District 7 school.

A handful of parents started the School Lunch Debt Solutions ECUSD 7 group after hearing about the need. According to the Edwardsville School District 7 superintendent, the district spends between $25,000-$30,000 to cover unpaid lunch bills yearly.

They prefer the debt overturning one of their own students down from a meal. It’s a service that got Trish Oberweis thinking the community needed to step in.

“I was stunned,” she said. “I thought that it was really just affecting one of the smaller schools and what I found is that the problem is really district-wide.”

The group is now fundraising online and holding school fundraising events to try to help cover the district’s debt.

Heather Porter admits she was skeptical at first.

“My initial thought wasn’t actually positive,” she said. “I thought, really, people aren’t paying?”

After researching the district’s demographics, she realized the complexity of the issue.

“We are assumably a very wealthy city, looking at it, Edwardsville compared to the surrounding cities,” she said, “and until I looked and saw the demographic numbers I thought 'okay there’s an actual need.”

So far the group has raised close to $5,000 online. They hope to continue fundraising beyond the end of this school year.

“Paying off the entire debt would be awesome and huge,” said Oberweis. “So we’re glad for every penny that we get and everything we can do to help pay it down.”
