A 29-year-old man was arrested after police said he initially claimed to shoot a man in self-defense in downtown St. Louis.
On Aug. 26, police said the suspect approached two men who stopped near the 1100 block of Lucas Ave asking for a ride at 3 a.m. The suspect, Patrick Owens, allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded the men to hand over their wallets.
Instead, the men refused and all three began to struggle over the gun. Owens shot one of the men before the victims wrestled the gun away and fled the scene.
According to police, officers spotted the victims running down the street, attempting to hide the gun nearby.
Moments later, Owens told police that the victims had attacked him and stolen his gun. Police initially arrested one of the men based on Owens' statements. A surveillance video helped police verify which scenario was factual.
One of the victims was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
Owens was charged with two counts of armed criminal action, attempted robbery, making a false report, assault in the second degree on Wednesday.
