EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) –

Happy Hooves Equine Rescue is sadden to announce that Diamond, 18 year-old thoroughbred horse that fell through an icy pond in Edwardsville Wednesday, passed away in her sleep Thursday morning.

The owner, Mary Evans, said she believes the horse was spooked by other horses who chased her to a nearby pond at the Happy Hooves Equine Rescue.

Evans told News 4 that she heard a big crack and saw the horse, named Diamond, stuck up to her shoulders in the muddy ice water.

“We found she was stuck up to the shoulder blades in the muck. Not much water but mud,” said Evans.

Volunteers and the Holiday Shores Fire Department rushed to the pond to extract her out.

Evans said Diamond suffered a sprained shoulder during the rescue.

In a statement from Happy Hooves, "She went out on her terms, she fought like she never had before yesterday.
Happy Hooves and all it's volunteers worked so hard the last two weeks to make her feel that someone cared."
