ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Carlos Martinez has been a hero on the field for the Cardinals for the past few years but what you might not know is the work his charity has done off the field.

This week, 18-year-old Camille Fernandez, from the Dominican Republic, is in St. Louis for a life-saving procedure thanks to Martinez’s “Tsunami Waves Foundation”.

Camille was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015 and suffered a relapse this past August. With the help of Carlos Martinez’s Tsunami Waves Foundation, Camille was able to connect with doctors in St. Louis.

The Fernandez family flew from the Dominican Republic to St. Louis in December. Camille immediately began chemotherapy at Mercy Hospital and this Thursday, she’ll have her bone marrow transplant at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The new bone marrow transplant unit just opened at St. Louis Children’s Hospital meaning Camille will be one of the first to go through the procedure there.
