ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Sports Commission unveiled a series of initiatives to inspire awareness and future Olympic opportunities Monday afternoon.

To commemorate the first Olympics hosted in America, the Sport Commission will build a new 16-foot by 9-foot tall Olympic rings statue on the campus of Washington University near the corner of Francis Field.

Francis Field is the oldest modern-day Olympic stadium still in use. The idea is not only to honor the past, but reignite the Olympic spirit in St. Louis.

The sculpture should be completed before the end of the year. Additional signage at Forest Park, Creve Coeur Lake Park and along the 1904 Olympic Marathon route will also be built.
