BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A 27-year-old man was arrested after a carjacking sparked a police pursuit in Belleville, Illinois Friday.

Around 3 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of East ‘C’ Street to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle in the area.

According to police, the victim left the keys inside their unlocked vehicle as they were loading tools in the trunk.  As the victim was leaving the area to retrieve more tools, they saw a man drive off with the vehicle on North Charles Street.

A Belleville officer located the vehicle near Route 161 and attempted to stop it. The suspect, Charles Boedecker of Maryland Heights, MO, refused and fled from police.

The pursuit ended after East St. Louis officers deployed spike strips near St. Clair Ave and the Interstate 255 overpass.

Boedecker lost control of the vehicle and struck an embankment while swerving to avoid the strips.

Boedecker was arrested at the scene and transported to the Belleville Police Department jail.

He is charged with one count of possession of a stolen vehicle, 2 counts of aggravated fleeing and one count of resisting a police officer.

He is held on a $ 75,000 bond.
