SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis police are investigating after an off-duty officer was involved in a shooting at a bar in the Tower Grove South neighborhood.

It happened shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night at the Grey Fox Cabaret, located at Spring and Potomac in south St. Louis. Police on scene told News 4 that an off-duty Velda City officer shot a man "multiple times" in the upper body.

The officer has 5 and a half years of service on the police force.

Officers received a call about a shooting at the Grey Fox Cabaret. After further investigation, police found the suspect inside the business after they were told he got into a verbal argument with two women.

The off-duty Velda City officer was socializing at the area pub with friends in the back of the facility when he heard a very loud noise of glass breaking towards the entrance of the pub followed up with a loud noise.

The officer immediately ran towards the incident unfolding and encountered an angry and intoxicated man holding a knife and attempting to stab the bartender and potentially other customers, police said.

The suspect was asked to leave multiple times during the argument. However, he continued to come back in the business and argue with the woman.

After being asked to leave again and realized the door was locked, the suspect kicked the front glass door of the bar and entered armed with a knife.

The victim, a patron at the bar, observed the armed suspect and confronted him.

Police say there was a physical struggle between the officer and the suspect, during which the officer fired one shot at the suspect to his upper body.

The suspect then ran outside and sent the officer on a chase.

Once outside, police say the suspect turned around and attacked the officer. The fight continued and told the suspect to drop the knife but the suspect refused.

Police say the officer fired several rounds at the man striking him multiple times.

The officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The 23-year-old suspect was transported to a local hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The officer was not injured during the incident. A knife was found at the scene.

Force Investigative Unit responded to the scene and is handling the investigation.

This investigation is ongoing at this time.
