PONTOON BEACH, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A Pontoon Beach Police officer seriously injured in a head-on crash is now awake and breathing on his own, according to the village's mayor.

"He's a warrior," says Michael Pagano, who visited officer Lee Brousseau Monday morning.

Brousseau is suffering from broken bones in his face, leg and ankle, and is likely to need several surgeries.

"He's a fighter," says longtime friend Sgt. James Autrey. "The doctors are amazed at how fast he's healed to this point."

Brousseau is an avid weightlifter and was also an MMA fighter.

Pontoon Beach Police and village officials say they are receiving an outpouring of support for the Brousseau family.
