GRANITE CITY, Ill. ( KMOV.com)-- The Metro East community is coming together to help injured police officer Lee Brousseau. The Pontoon Beach police officer was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Route 111 last week.

According to police, a white pickup truck swerved into the northbound lane of Route 111 and hit a Pontoon Beach police cruiser head-on near New Poag Road around 8:15 a.m. Thursday. After the two vehicles collided, the pickup truck caught fire. Daniel Bell, 33, died and Officer Brousseau was seriously injured.

Mayor Mike Pagano said Brousseau is improving. They removed the breathing tube and he is breathing on his own, but has a long way to go.

That's why several local restaurants are organizing fundraisers.

Uncle Linny's in Granite City is hosting a fundraiser Friday Feb. 2. All day they will donate 15 percent of profits to Officer Brousseau. They will also sell shirts. Roma Pizza is hosting a similar event on February 20th.

"He's improving but he has a long way to go. Lee comes in here all the time along with the other officers, he's like family," said Roland Niederkorn, the general manager at Uncle Linny's.
