Crown Candy still has plenty of customers on a 25-degree day in St. Louis.

Owner Andy Karandzieff’s grandfather, Harry founded the business in 1913 after immigrating to St. Louis from Greece.

“He has to learn the language, he had to work a lot of different jobs to save up money and then he bought this place,” said Karandzieff.

If you’ve ever wondered how “Crown Candy” got its name, its’ because the sign came ready-made.

“My grandfather liked the name “Crown” and said it sounded like royalty and it just had a good ring to it,” said Karandzieff.

After 105 years, customers keep coming in for the originality of the business.

“The soda fountain back bar is original, these candy cases are original,” said Karandzieff.

Crown Candy is well known for its BLT sandwich, heavy on the bacon.

“In the summertime, we’ll go through 300-500 pounds of bacon a day,” said Karandzieff.

Depending on who’s in the kitchen, you could get up to 17 slices on your sandwich.

“Over the years, the bacon sandwich just got bigger and bigger, and that’s how it took on a life of its own,” said Karandzieff.

The sandwich is $10 right now, to learn more about Crowncandy, visit their website.
