Detectives are looking for a suspect that took off after allegedly robbing and beating a woman with a hammer while she waited for a bus in the Central West End.

The woman told police she was waiting for a bus in the 300 block of N. Euclid around 5: 50 a.m. Tuesday when a man drove up next to her in a light-colored Chevrolet Malibu.

Police say the suspect got out of the car armed with a hammer and demanded the woman’s NorthFace backpack.

The suspect pulled the backpack off the woman and hit her with a hammer and demanded she get into his car.

"They were making an attempt to take her and she didn’t get in the car," said a witness. "They were trying to put her in the car but we came out and I said 'hey what are you guys doing?' And they got in the car and drove off."

After a struggle with the victim, the suspect got back into his vehicle and drove southbound on Euclid out of sight.

While police are only referring to one suspect, the witness says he saw the suspect get in a car driven by another male.

The witness is an employee at the Coffee Cartel, just a few blocks from where the robbery occurred.

He asked News 4 not identify him out of fear for his safety since the suspects are still on the run.

He says he a co-worker were throwing out garbage at a dumpster near the bus stop when they heard the woman scream.

"The inner hero in me just started running towards her to see what was going on because I had to help her," he said.

The victim suffered an injury to her face and head, however, she did decline medical treatment.

The woman said her laptop, glasses, credit card, textbooks, and notebooks were stolen during the robbery.

At the time of the robbery, the vehicle had no license plates or temp tags.
