ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A police officer from Pontoon Beach, Illinois is home from the hospital following a fatal crash that happened in late January.

Mayor of Pontoon Beach Michael Pagano confirmed on Facebook that officer Lee Brousseau, 44, is home resting; however, Brousseau has "many surgeries ahead of him but his trauma team wants to wait for a bit," according to Pagano.

Brousseau broke bones in his face, leg and ankle and had to be cut out of his car after the accident.

The head-on crash happened in the morning of Jan. 25 on Route 111 in the Metro East.

According to police, a white pickup truck swerved into the northbound lane of Route 111 and Brousseau's police cruiser head-on near New Poag Road. After the two vehicles collided, the pickup truck caught fire.

The man driving the truck, Daniel Bell, 33, of South Roxana, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

"He died on impact. He didn't even know the fire happened. He did not take one breath in the fire," said Bell's wife, Starla.

Bell was the father of five children: four boys and one girl between the ages of 3 and 15.

Brousseau joined the Pontoon Beach Police Department last year after servings five years in South Roxana. He is married with two children.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Bell's funeral expenses.

Editor’s note: During a press conference Jan. 25, Illinois State Police officials said the man who died was from Bethalto. They later corrected the statement to say the officer was from the Bethalto.
