A local organization is creating Mental Health Awareness with a special dancing with the 'St. Louis Stars' event.

Three years ago, Deandra Smith says she was desperate for help.

“Battling with depression, anxiety, recently diagnosed with PTSD and just wasn’t getting anywhere,” said Deandra Smith, Independence Center member.

A psychiatrist suggested he come here to Independence Center, a local organization that helps those living with severe and persistent mental illness.

“Our focus is to help them regain confidence, dignity, purpose that is often taken from them in living this challenging disease,” said Mark Bethell, Independence Center Executive Director.

Smith found his niche in the kitchen at the Independence Center.

He and six other local business leaders have teamed up with a professional dance partner for a fun night of entertaining competition and fundraising.

Independence Center helps roughly 1,400 individuals every year through its various services.

News 4’s Claire Kellett will be the Emcee of this program’s dancing with the St. Louis stars.
