A local program is working to reduce the spread of AIDS and Hepatitis C along with fighting the heroin crisis.

The Missouri Safe Project works to reduce the use of dirty, unsafe needles by anyone caught up in the opioid epidemic and other drug use.

The program announced a $50,000 grant from the Elton John Aids Foundation on Wednesday.

The money will be used for a needle exchange program.

“The next phase of the grant is to deploy syringe exchange programs, we’ll be doing that through outreach and office visits,” said Aaron Laxton, Missouri Safe Project.

Laxton says this is a move by Missouri lawmakers to provide more legal protections for needle exchange programs.
