CAUGHT IN THE ACT: Man takes bike and presents with family in next room

FOX10 News is committed to putting the spotlight on people who are “Caught in the Act.” Each week, we work with local enforcement to show surveillance video in the hopes that you can help crack the case.

Mobile Police are looking for a man caught going into a family's carport, all while they were in the next room watching football. It happened on January 1 in a neighborhood off Airport Blvd, when the family was watching the Sugar Bowl.

Home surveillance video shows a man looking into the windows of the home before walking into the carport.

"You just feel violated,” said the homeowner, who didn’t want to be identified. “We were wide awake, right in the room next to the carport."

The video shows the man walk around the family’s car to grab an old 1995 bike.

"My husband, when he was 18-years-old, bought that bike with his own money. So that is something you don't realize when you are taking something that it could be special to somebody,” said the homeowner.

Then the man sets his eyes on bags filled with presents meant to be donated to a refugee family. The video shows the man trying to figure out what's inside.

"That breaks my heart because that was something people did it out of the kindness of their hearts, and he just felt the need and was entitled enough to go to somebody's house and take things like that,” said the homeowner.

The video shows the man leaving with one hand filled with gifts and the other with a cooler. He then leans the bike up against the wall and puts everything on the handlebars, before taking off on the bike.

"So going back and looking through that video how does it make you feel?" asked Reporter Devan Coffaro.

"I was very aggravated,” responded the homeowner. “We don't have much of value out there, but it was just the thought that somebody was out in your carport while you are awake… it's unsettling."

To make it even more unsettling, the video shows the homeowner walking out less than thirty minutes later.

"I walk out to get something out of my car and I noticed that the door is open and I locked it. That's scary because I'd wonder if I had come out 26 minutes earlier and noticed a man in my carport, how would I react, and what would've happened?"
