SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A South City family is among others along a Lindenwood Park road left with ransacked cars on Friday morning, but unlike other victims, they noticed something missing that was outside of their car.

Matthew Simon noticed the gate leading to his back porch was open early Friday morning when he was about to take his son to school. He also noticed the mountain bike he’d purchased for his son as a Christmas gift was gone.

“It feels terrible that people come in and take your stuff,” said Simon, “we work hard for what we got.”

Simon also noticed his car had been searched through, some of the belongings found on the road, including his wife’s jacket with $45 inside.

“He knew what he was coming for,” said Simon, referring to the bike.

A surveillance camera on Simon’s home captured what appears to be two men going to the home, one opening the back gate for the other. Cameras were rolling as that man went right for the bike and taking off with it.

“You definitely feel violated,” said Simon.

At least one other neighbor found their car had been searched through.

On the same road, a few blocks away, Karlye Jones noticed her car had been ransacked for the second time this month. She says the thief only took off with spare change. In Simon’s case, he took off with the bike worth several hundred dollars.

He’s mostly upset for his son. He’s since handed the surveillance footage to police and hopes it will help them catch the culprit.

“We work hard for this stuff,” he said, “you know, we want our bike back, we want our kids' bike back.”
